Setting Up Your Hotel's Digital Presence in 2026

From Google Business Profile to OTA optimization — a practical guide for small hotels getting online for the first time.

Setting Up Your Hotel's Digital Presence in 2026

Your Hotel's Online Checklist

If your hotel doesn't exist on Google, it doesn't exist for 70% of potential guests. Here's a practical, step-by-step guide to building your digital presence.

1. Google Business Profile (Free, Essential)

This is the single most important thing you can do online. When someone searches "hotels in [your city]", this is what appears.

Setup checklist:

  • ☐ Claim or create your Google Business Profile
  • ☐ Add accurate name, address, phone number
  • ☐ Upload 10+ high-quality photos (rooms, lobby, food, views)
  • ☐ Set correct category: "Hotel" or "Guest House"
  • ☐ Add amenities, check-in/check-out times
  • ☐ Enable Google direct booking (if available)
  • ☐ Respond to every review within 24 hours
  • 2. OTA Listings (Revenue Driver)

Start with the big three for the Indian market:

    MakeMyTrip/Goibibo — Largest domestic audience

    Booking.com — International travelers

    Agoda — Southeast Asian travelers

    For each platform:

  • Professional photos (invest in a photographer — ₹5,000-10,000)
  • Accurate room descriptions with amenities
  • Competitive initial pricing (you can adjust once reviews come in)
  • Respond to all reviews (positive and negative)
  • 3. Your Own Website (Trust Builder)

Even a simple one-page website builds credibility. Include:

  • Hero image of your best room/view
  • Room types with photos and starting rates
  • Location with Google Maps embed
  • Contact details (phone, email, WhatsApp)
  • Direct booking option (via booking engine)
  • 4. WhatsApp Business (Communication)

    Set up WhatsApp Business with:

  • Professional profile photo (hotel exterior or logo)
  • Business hours
  • Quick replies for common questions
  • Catalog with room types
  • 5. Social Media (Optional but Helpful)

    In order of impact:

    1. Instagram — Visual platform, great for showcasing rooms and experiences

    2. Facebook — Still relevant for older demographics

    3. YouTube — Virtual tours perform exceptionally well

    The 80/20 Rule

If you can only do 2 things: Google Business Profile + one OTA listing. These will drive 80% of your online bookings. Everything else is gravy.

    Maintenance

Online presence isn't a one-time setup. Monthly things to do:

  • Check and respond to new reviews
  • Update photos seasonally
  • Adjust rates based on demand
  • Post 2-3 times on social media (if active)
  • The hotels that maintain their online presence consistently outperform those that set and forget.
